JO Optional Gymnastics

Part of the US Gymnastics Junior Olympic (JO) program. Optional Gymnastics constitutes Level 8 to 10, and involves routines constructed of skills chosen specifically for each individual gymnast

JO Compulsory
Gymnastics

Compulsory Gymnastics is from Level 4 to 7. These competitive routines are constructed by US Gymnastics and must be performed by ALL gymnasts at that level.

Junior Development
Gymnastics (JD)

Designed for gymnasts who have a late start into gymnastics, navigating injury, desire fewer training times or less commitment. The JD program also revolves around Optional Gymnastics, allowing us to cater routines to the gymnasts ability.

The Men’s Junior Olympic Age Group Competition Program provides training and competitive opportunities for beginner to elite gymnasts from ages 6 to 18.

The Junior Olympic Program is organized into ten different levels of training or competition. Each level has multiple age groups and opportunities for participation and competition. Competition is carried out at the local, state, regional and national levels through USA Gymnastics sanctioned invitational meets and championship level meets. The Men’s Junior Olympic National Championships are held in May of each year for eligible athletes in Levels 8, 9 and 10 who have qualified through their Regional Championships. The season culminates for eligible Level 10 athletes at the P&G Gymnastics Championships.

GW Structure

Our structure is specifically designed to promote movement between groups as an individuals circumstances change - ability, desire, time, etc

It is our Goal to provide the best opportunities for each Gymnast at their stage of development. The exact same information/technique is given to EVERY gymnast in our program.  The only difference is the rate at which it is applied - this is a direct reflection of development and personal commitment

Pre Team

Level 1 - 3

Goal - To introduce and develop fundamental gymnastics

Age - 5 - 8yr

Pre Team is for boys aged 5 to 8yrs who show an ability and an interest for gymnastics.

2 Classes Per Week (2hr Class)

Fundamental Gymnastics is taught with emphasis on Flexibility, Strength, Coordination and Basic gymnastics body shapes. This is a fun class where the boys are introduced to all 6 Mens Gymnastics Events plus Trampoline in preparation for competition.

Beginner Team

Level 4

Goal - To introduce modified competitive gymnastics

Age - 6 - 10yr

Beginner Team is the entry level to competitive gymnastics.

Traditionally we begin with 2 Classes Per Week (2.5hr Class). As the boys become accustomed to the training, times are increased to 3 days at the coaches discretion.

Fundamental Gymnastics is taught with emphasis on Flexibility, Strength, Coordination and Basic gymnastics body shapes. This is a more serious class but enjoyment is still the main focus. Competitive routines are introduced and the boys compete in the US Gymnastics sanctioned JO competitions.

Compulsory Team

Level 5 - 7

Goal - To develop successful competitive gymnastics at a National Level

Age - 7 - 11yr

Beginning at 3 Classes Per Week (3hr Class, 9 hrs per week), as the boys move through the levels, training time is capped at a maximum of 3.5hr class, 5 days per week.

Compulsory routines are those designed by US Gymnastics. Each gymnast is required to perform a routine on each of the 6 Events consisting of around 10 skills.

The Compulsory Program is further divided into two divisions;

Division II

These "BASE" routines are Judged from a Score of 9.5 if they complete all of the required skills and have the ability to be awarded 0.3 "Virtuosity" (for exceptional execution of a skill) and a 0.2 "Stick" Bonus. The maximum score for Division II is 10.0

Division I

Consists of the same "BASE" routine as above plus the option of additional "BONUS" skills worth 0.5 each. Each level has differing amounts of bonus skills.

- Level 5       3 Bonus skills           Total Score  11.5

- Level 6       3 Bonus skills           Total Score  11.5

- Level 7       4 Bonus skills           Total Score  12.0

Junior Development Team

Level JD

Goal - For those who have limited time, finances or starting gymnastics at a later age

Age - 11 - 18yr

The JD Program is designed to offer a broad-based, affordable competitive experience outside the traditional Jr. Olympic Levels Program to attract and retain a diverse group of athletes.

Traditionally we begin with 2 Classes Per Week (3.5hr Class). As the boys become accustomed to the training, times are increased to 4 days at the coaches discretion.

JD is a great program for gymnasts that:

  • Are at a variety of levels, abilities, age and commitment levels and want to enjoy the benefits gymnastics has to offer while having more flexibility than the Junior Olympic Program.

  • Have a passion for gymnastics and want to stay involved in the sport for the long term, but do not necessarily have national or elite level competitive goals.

  • Are busy with other activities or sports but still want to be active in the sport as a competitive or non-competitive gymnast.

Optional Team

Level 8 - 10

Goal - To produce successful competitive gymnastics at a National Level

Age - 11 - 18yr

5 to 6 Classes Per Week (3.5/4hr Class)

Boys in the Optional Divisions have the ability to construct their own routines to set Requirements. Each skill is given a value by the FIG and these values are added to give the final score.

Future Stars

Age 8 - 13

Goal - Producing National Team members for competitive International Gymnastics

Invitation Only

The Future Stars Program is an athlete development and education program that is in ADDITION to the regular JO Program and Competition Season. Only those athletes that are participating in the FS program can be considered for the Junior National Team. The Future Stars Program consists of six age groups from 8 to 13 yrs.

These boys perform selected skills and compulsory routines on the six men's events plus trampoline, strength and flexibility evaluations. The 8-9 year old division participates up to the Regional level while the 10, 11, 12 and 13 year old divisions can qualify to the National level.

The Junior National Development Team is determined through the use of a "Future Stars" National Championships/Evaluation held in the fall of each year. The competition targets the 10, 11, 12 and 13-year old age groups of athletes. The evaluations are done by a coach/Junior National Coaching Staff member and a NGJA judge working together to produce a score based on technique and execution.

Junior Elite (JE)

Age 11 - 18

Goal - Producing US Junior National Team members for competitive International Gymnastics

Invitation Only

The JE program is in ADDITION to the regular JO Program. These athletes participate in the JO Competition Season but also must compete a "Second" set of compulsory Technical Sequences (usually held on a second day of competition). To be considered for a National Team Member, boys are required to participate in the JE Program.
