Grips are an ESSENTIAL part of being a gymnasts. They are designed to protect the hands from friction and also help hold the gymnast on the equipment. As the difficulty of the skills the boys are performing increases, so to does the possibility of falling off increase.  Boys are REQUIRED to have both types of Grips from Level 5 onward.

There are two (2) Types of Grips for male gymnasts

H-Bar Grips

- these grips are used for the High Bar only

- have a thin dowel (round piece under finger    holes, acts as a "hook" to hold onto the bar)

- have 3 finger holes and are wide

- come in either velcro or buckle

- these grips are used for the Rings only

- have a large dowel (round piece under      finger holes, acts as a "hook" to hold onto the  bar)

- have 2 finger holes and are thin

- come in either velcro or buckle

The boys will require both styles, Rings and High Bar as they are designed for different purposes. You will also have the choice between Velcro or Buckle. We recommend for your first pair that you purchase Velcro. They are a lot easier to put on! We also suggest those grips from Turn-Gymnastics as they are made with thin/malleable leather for light younger boys and have a padded wrist support. As the boys get older, we recommend Rei-Sport buckle grips. They have thicker leather and the buckle gives a constant tightness and does not undo. Finally, there are also Kevlar Grips. These are for older boys that are made by surrounding kevlar with leather. These grips are required for our Senior boys as they do not break or stretch.

The boys will also require wrist bands to protect the wrist. Be sure to purchase long ones that cover the entire grip.

To purchase, go to the following websites. Be sure to check the sizing charts (provided on all websites) or ask another gymnast to try his grips for size. (different companies make different sizes)

Measure from base of palm to tip of longest finger.  It is very important that you choose the right size, if your size falls between the sizes, order the smaller size. The guards can stretch.

  • For ReiSport Grips
